This photograph is a studio photo postcard of Margaret Graham, formerly Margaret Jordan and born Margaret Jane Knowles and her husband or future husband Robert Graham. Robert married Margaret on June 28, 1920. Margaret appears considerably younger in this postcard than Robert and Margaret Graham on Bench Post Card or Robert and Margaret Graham by Fence.

Margaret Jame Knowles is the daughter of William and Isabella Knowles. She married James Oscar Jordan on December 30, 1896 and they were separated on in November 1911 and were divorced on June 19, 1919. Typically back then after widowhood or divorce, one would wait a year before remarrying which is what she did as they married on June 28, 1920.

Robert Graham was a border in the Jordan household in 1910 and continued as either a border or a separate apartment in the same building for many years after that.

The photo date appears to range between about 1918 to 1920. One possibility is the photo day is Margaret’s 40th birthday, March 19, 1918, a special occasion and one which would match her warm coat and a special day for dressing up for an evening out. But that is just a guess. Another possibility is it is her wedding day, but her heavy coat doesn’t match a June wedding. Another possibility is this is their engagement photo, perhaps March 19, 1920 on her 42nd birthday. It is the studio photo postcard that suggests it might be. Back then it appears common one would send a studio photo postcard to family and friends announce their engagement.

The Leonhardt family lent the original of this photo postcard to Dave Jordan the late 1980s who photographed it. There was no written text on the back. The Leonhardt connection to the Jordans is Margaret Jane Jordan and Muriel Leonhardt were Knowles sisters.
